Six Stories is an ongoing initiative by ACGAL that seeks to bring the richness and diversity of Indian literature into new languages and contexts through translation.
The Six Stories Translators’ Residency is conceived as an immersive gathering of translators and writers—a space where language is explored with care, attention, and critical engagement. Over five days, a small group of selected translators will work closely with the texts of six contemporary authors, while also engaging directly with the writers themselves.
At its core, the residency foregrounds the encounter: between translator and text, translator and author, and among translators working across languages.
About the Residency
Mentored by Anjum Katyal—author and director of the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival—and V. Ramaswamy, noted non-fiction writer and translator, the residency offers a rare opportunity to engage with translation as both craft and creative practice.
Conceived as a practice-led, immersive programme, the residency creates a sustained space for thinking through translation—not merely as a technical exercise, but as an interpretive and imaginative act. The participants will:
1. Work on selected stories by six contemporary authors
2. Engage in conversations and feedback sessions with the authors
3. Take part in discussions around translation as a literary and cultural practice
4. Interact with invited speakers and practitioners in the field
Be part of a focused, collaborative environment for reading, reflection, and exchange.
Access and Progression
1. Admission to the residency is selective.
2. Applicants are required to submit translation samples as part of their application (Text1 & Text 2)
3. Application deadline: 3 May 2026
4. Notification of selected participants: 15 May 2026

সীতা মায়ের চুল

পুরুলিয়ার এই পাহাড়ে রামসীতা এসেছিলেন, বনবাস কালে। গ্রীষ্মকালে গাছে গাছে ঝুলে থাকে কালো কালো কিছু পাতলা ঝুরঝুরা। চুলের মতই প্রায়। হয়তো বা কোনো শুকিয়ে যাওয়া লতা।
গাঁ বুড়ো বলল – পান্তা খেতে চেয়েছিলেন রামচন্দ্র। সীতা ঠাকুর আগের রাতে জল ঢেলে রেখেছিলেন তাতে। শালপত্রে খুব যতন করে বেড়ে দিয়েছিল বাসি ভাত, সজনে শাক আর লবণ। রামচন্দ্র বললেন, কাঁচা নংকা কুথা?
কাঁচা নংকা তো নাই, খুঁজতে গেলেন সীতা ঠাকুরানী। এ বনে ও বনে খুঁজে একটাও নংকা পেলেন না। সীতা মাথা নিচা করে ছিছল পিছল করে মুখে বুলে পেলাম নি গ। রামচন্দ্র রাগ করে খাওয়া ছেড়ে উঠে যান। সীতার মন গুমান হয়।অভিমানে দু হাতে মাথার চুল ছিঁড়তে থাকেন। সিটা ছিল বৈশাখ মাস। আজ ও বৈশাখ এলে লতায় পাতায় বৃক্ষ শাখায় ঝুলে থাকে সীতা মায়ের চুল।

আত্ম-পর – বনফুল

সকলটা খেটে খুটে দুপুর বেলায় দক্ষিণ দিকের বারান্দায় একটা বিছানা পেতে একটু
সকলটা খেটে খুটে দুপুর বেলায় দক্ষিণ দিকের বারান্দায় একটা বিছানা পেতে একটু শুয়েছি। তন্দ্রাটি যেই এসেছে— অমনি মুখের উপর খপ ক’রে কি একটা পড়ল। তাড়াতাড়ি উঠে দেখি একটা কদাকার কুৎসিত, পাখীর ছানা। লোম নেই-ডানা নেই-কিম্ভূত কিমাকার ! রাগে ও ঘৃণায় সেটাকে উঠোনে ছুঁড়ে ফেলে দিলাম। কাছেই একটা বেড়াল যেন অপেক্ষা করছিল-টপ করে মুখে করে নিয়ে গেল। শালিক পাখীদের আর্তরব শোনা যেতে লাগল।
আমি এপােশ ওপাশ করে আবার ঘুমিয়ে পড়লাম।
তারপর চার পাঁচ বছর কেটে গেছে !
আমাদের বাড়ীতে হঠাৎ একদিন আমারই বড় আদরের একমাত্র ছেলে শচীন হঠাৎ সর্পাঘাতে মারা গেল। ডাক্তার- কবরেজ-ওঝা-বৈদ্যি কেউ তাকে বাঁচাতে পারলে না । শচীন জন্মের মত আমাদের ছেড়ে চলে গেল ।
বাড়ীতে কান্নার তুমুল হাহাকার।
ভিতরে আমার স্ত্রী মূৰ্ছিত অজ্ঞান। তাকে নিয়ে একজন লোক শশব্যস্ত হয়ে উঠেছে। বাইরে এসে দেখি দড়ির খাটিয়ার ওপর শুইয়ে বাছাকে নিয়ে যাবার আয়োজন হচ্ছে।
তখন বহুদিন পরে— কেন জানিনা— সেই পাখির ছানাটার কথা মনে পড়ে গেল ।
সেই চার পাঁচ বছর আগে নিস্তব্ধ দুপুরে বেড়ালের মুখে সেই অসহায় পাখীর ছানাটা, আর তার চারদিকে পক্ষীমাতাদের আর্ত হাহাকার । হঠাৎ যেন একটা অজানা ইঙ্গিতে শিউরে উঠলাম।
